MassDOT Springfield – West Springfield- Bridge Replacement, (US-20) Park Avenue Over Connecticut River

Springfield, MA

As part of preliminary design efforts for the replacement or rehabilitation of the Route 20 bridge over the railroad and associated roadway improvements, Brennan conducted a detailed bridge and topographic field survey along Route 20 / West Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. The purpose of the survey was to support engineering design, environmental permitting, and right-of-way (ROW) analysis by providing accurate, up-to-date data on existing site conditions.

The survey area extended from the roundabout at the western approach to approximately 1,000 feet northeast of the east bridge abutment, past the intersection with Avocado Street. This work was critical to developing design plans that address aging infrastructure, improve traffic operations and safety, and ensure compliance with MassDOT standards.

The Survey included the collection of physical feature locations and representative ground elevations throughout the project corridor. Key elements documented were:

  • Edge of pavement and roadway geometry
  • Existing signage, structures, and guardrails
  • Ditches, wetland buffers, and topographic features
  • Layout lines in accordance with MassDOT ROW guidelines
  • Bridge elements, including end of superstructure, centerline of bearings at abutments and piers, and limits of structural components
  • Pavement markings, drainage structures, utilities, and record baselines
  • ROW boundaries for each parcel within the survey limits

Final deliverables included a stamped PDF drawing and a CAD file with logically organized, clearly labeled layers. The survey was performed at a scale of 1” = 20’ and referenced the NAVD 1988 vertical datum.
